Cinco de Mayo

Every year our 8th Grade Spanish Students celebrate El Cinco de Mayo. This year’s theme was artists of Spanish speaking countries. To get ready for this project, our Spanish Teacher, Señora Dotto formed groups and each group researched the artist assigned to them. After they gathered the information, each group wrote a biography of their artist and reproduced a painting from that artist. Some of the paintings reproduced were “The Persistence of Memory” by Salvador Dalí , “The Flower Carrier” formerly “The Flower Vendor” by Diego Rivera, “The Old Guitarist” by Pablo Picasso, “El Dolor” by Oswaldo Guayasamín and many more. On the day of the celebration, the 8th grade students read their artist biography and accomplishments to the audience (faculty, administration and 7th grade students) and simultaneously showed photo slides related to their reading. In addition, some students dressed up like the artist they represented and read quotes in Spanish by those artists.

Our students were also honored by the performance of an accomplished World Amateur Latin Champion Roman Nabatov. He is the owner of Metro-Dance located in Marlboro. Mr. Nabatov danced some Latin dances with our talented OHA 7th grade student Leah Wilson.

Furthermore, there was the beloved annual salsa contest. Each and every student worked for weeks to create his or her perfect salsa and on the day of the contest after the readings and performance, our audience was treated to a salsa tasting and vote for their favorite one. This year there was over 33 salsas from the traditional to fruit. Well, as always our judges (7th graders / faculty / staff) enjoyed the salsa tasting and had a difficult time choosing the one they liked the most.

Congratulations to Señora Dotto and all of our 8th grade students for a wonderful job they did to make another Cinco de Mayo Celebration at Oak Hill Academy a great success. A special thank you to our guess Mr. Nabatov and Leah for their outstanding performance and finally to our audience for coming and sharing this day with us.

¡MUCHAS GRACIAS!
